Auger created decorative panneaux and painted equipages and portchaises. The works of this court painter, whose oeuvre has not yet been sufficiently explored, are characterized by elegant and dynamic compositions and a swift and powerful rhythm of the brush. Only few of Auger’s works have survived, since his panneaux were intended to outlast time only in exceptional cases. The figures of the putti in the present composition resemble the central group of an allegory of autumn in Auger’s cycle of the seasons in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes (Inv. No. 655). The head of the putto on the right-hand side is almost identical with that of the putto at the left margin in the Nantes picture.
